When Stress Becomes Your Default

Stress is a normal part of life.

It can be a demanding job, relationship challenges, parenting, major transitions, or uncertainty can all activate your stress response. But what happens when stress starts to feel like your default?

You may not think of yourself as an anxious or stressed person. You might simply feel tired, irritable, overwhelmed, distracted, or like you’re constantly “on edge” You get things done, show up for everyone else, and keep moving but inside, you’re flipping out.

What does chronic stress feel like?

Chronic stress doesn’t always look like a breakdown in the work place or at home. For many successful adults, it looks like:

  • Constantly thinking about what needs to be done next

  • Difficulty relaxing, even when you have time to rest

  • Feeling overwhelmed by small things

  • Irritability or being more reactive than usual

  • Trouble sleeping or feeling tired despite getting enough sleep

  • Overthinking decisions and conversations

  • Feeling responsible for keeping everything under control

  • Difficulty being present with the people you love

Sometimes stress is less about what is happening around you and more about what your nervous system has learned to expect.

Why can’t I just relax?

This might be a helpful question to ask yourself! If you’ve been operating in survival mode for a long time, slowing down can actually feel uncomfortable. Your mind may have learned that staying busy, prepared, productive, or in control keeps you safe.

This is one reason simply telling yourself to “stop worrying” or “take a vacation” doesn’t always create lasting relief.

Managing stress isn’t just about doing less. It’s also about understanding what keeps your mind and body feeling like they have to stay on alert.
